Auctioneers Note: Colonel Malcom V. Fortier grew up in Spokane and graduated from Washington State College in 1914. As a WSC cadet officer Fortier met then first lieutneant Jonathan Wainwright and a lifelong friendship was forged. They served together in Germany during WWI and in the Philippines in WWII. Both were taken prisoner by the Japanese at Corregidor and survived multiple POW camps. In 1946 Fortier published his book “The Life of a P.O.W. Under the Japanese In Caricature” which he dedicated to General Wainwright. After the War Fortier returned to Japan and served under General MacArthur. The fine Oriental collection in the auction was procurred by the Fortiers before and after the War and has been preserved by the family since 1958.
